Completing a drug or alcohol treatment program may be one of the hardest things you’ve ever done. What may be even harder, however, is maintaining your sobriety after substance abuse treatment.
One of the most important things you can do for yourself in your recovery is to get a sponsor who you trust to help you maintain sobriety after substance abuse treatment. A sponsor is more than just a person you can call when you feel like you want to use again – your sponsor may be the one person in your life who understands what you are going through and who can keep you motivated during your recovery from drug or alcohol abuse.
You may believe you can maintain sobriety without a sponsor. While it is possible to do on your own, there are many benefits to having a sponsor after substance abuse treatment:
A sponsor can provide helpful guidance. Once you’ve completed your time in substance abuse treatment, you have only completed one step in your journey of recovery. Your sponsor can help guide you the rest of the way, as they have experienced how sobriety works outside of treatment. Make sure your sponsor is someone you trust enough to share things with and to guide you through the 12 steps and whatever challenges you may face.
A sponsor can give you needed support. In substance abuse treatment, you were provided the constant support you needed to become sober and not relapse. Maintaining sobriety after substance abuse treatment can be difficult, and your sponsor can provide you the support you need. Your sponsor will be there for you 24 hours a day, in good and bad times, so that you know you have a supportive person in your life if you need it.
A sponsor will make sure you don’t feel alone. It can be lonely when you first get out of substance abuse treatment. You may not yet have mended your relationships with the family or friends who you drove away while you were using. Your sponsor will make sure you have someone to turn to and to talk with so that you don’t feel alone.
A sponsor won’t be judgmental. The last thing you want to feel as you are recovering from drug or alcohol abuse is judged. You may feel that people in your world are judging you based on your past. Know that you can count on your sponsor to not be judgmental and to help you work through your problems, no matter what you are going through.
Finding a Sponsor After Substance Abuse Treatment
So how do you go about finding a sponsor who you can trust and rely on? Take time to talk to people whose progress you admire until you find a person who you would feel comfortable having as your sponsor. This person should be someone who is experienced with the 12 steps and who can guide you through things that may be difficult for you to do once you are sober.
Know that you don’t have to go through substance abuse treatment alone. Finding the right person to be your sponsor will help you to stay strong during your recovery and ensure you are supported when you need it most.
