There are number of different things that you can say to your friend as they enter drug rehab. Here are just a few suggestions:

  • “Do what you need to do to get better.” Your friend is likely scared upon entering drug rehab, especially if they are fearful of losing connections with those they are leaving behind. It is important that you let them know that you want them to do whatever it is they need to do to get better, and that you will always be there to support them.
  • “I am here for you.” Even if your contact is limited during this time, it is crucial to let your friend know that whenever they need you as a shoulder to lean on, you will be there. You want to continually support their good choices and sobriety.
  • “I am going to get help, too.” By telling your friend that you are going to get help too, you are letting them know that they are not alone. By getting educated yourself on how to have a relationship with your newly sober friend, you can be more supportive as they continue to progress.
  • “I am proud of you.” Making the decision to enter drug rehab is not an easy one. Let your friend know that you are proud of their decision. By supporting their decision and encouraging their progress, you are providing them with the determination needed to work through the many challenges that they will face during their time spent in drug rehab.

Of course, what you choose to say to your friend entering drug rehab depends on the circumstances and your relationship with them. Always do what makes sense for you, and know that there is support for you as a friend through organizations such as Al-Anon.
